According to AS and El País, Fulham bought not all of the player’s rights for €40 million, but approximately 70 percent. Real retained around 30 percent of Gonzalo’s rights in order to benefit from a future transfer.

• to receive a large sum from the player’s current transfer;

• to earn another share if Gonzalo is sold for more in the future.

Some sources also report that Real retained an option to buy the player back. However, as the full legal clauses of the deal have not been made public, it is too early to treat this information as a final official condition.

Why did Arbeloa choose Gonzalo in particular?

Gonzalo also impressed at the FIFA Club World Cup, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer and earning a place in FIFA’s Team of the Tournament. After those performances, Real extended his contract to 2030 in 2025 and promoted him to the first team.

51 appearances and 13 goals for Real

According to Reuters, Gonzalo made 51 appearances for Real’s first team in all competitions and scored 13 goals. He was also part of the squad that won La Liga and the Champions League in 2024.

His numbers in Madrid were not poor, but intense competition for places in the first team meant regular playing time was not guaranteed. At Fulham, he will have a greater opportunity to become the starting centre-forward.

That is the main advantage of this transfer for the 22-year-old forward: instead of waiting for opportunities from the bench, he can play every week in the Premier League.

Fulham needed a new centre-forward
