Tesla ends Model X production: factory being retooled for robots

Tesla has officially ceased production of its iconic Model X electric vehicle. On May 5, the final unit of this model rolled off the assembly line at the Fremont factory. Tesla employee Steve Pennewell announced on social media that the last car was signed by staff, finished in an exclusive 'garnet red' color, and features a special plaque on the center console. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports.

This collector's car, in the Model X Plaid version, closes an important chapter in the brand's history. Along with the Model S, these vehicles long defined Tesla's premium image. However, with the entry of the company's mass-market models, demand for them has significantly declined.

According to 2025 global delivery data, Tesla sold a total of 1.6 million Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Meanwhile, combined sales of Model S and Model X reached only 50,000 units. This discrepancy prompted the company's management to reconsider its strategy.

Currently, work has begun to adapt production capacities at Tesla factories for future technologies. Specifically, the Fremont plant is being prepared for the mass production of the company's Optimus humanoid robots.
