In the first nine months of this year, 5895 road traffic accidents were registered on Uzbekistan's roads. This information was presented by Qutbiddin Burkhanov, chairman of the Senate Committee on Defense and Security Issues, at the plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis.
The data presented shows positive changes in the field of road traffic safety. Compared to the same period in 2024, the number of accidents has decreased by 3.8 percent, or by 232 cases.
The report also separately addressed statistics on those injured and killed as a result of traffic accidents. The death toll decreased by 4.8 percent, dropping from 1368 to 1303.
The number of citizens who suffered bodily injuries of varying degrees also fell by 3.5 percent, from 4759 to 4592. Analyses showed that many incidents were related to collisions involving pedestrians.
Nevertheless, improvements were also observed in this area: the number of such accidents decreased by 5.8 percent, from 2855 to 2689. According to Qutbiddin Burkhanov, the results achieved were the outcome of comprehensive measures.
Among important factors noted were the development of a culture of complying with traffic rules among drivers and pedestrians, improvement of the driver training and retraining system, and the creation of a legal framework aimed at the full digitalization of traffic management. However, the senator stated that there are still issues in certain regions that require attention.
These include insufficient road signs, unsatisfactory road surfaces, and a lack of safe conditions for pedestrians. These issues remain the focus of responsible agencies in order to further reduce the number of accidents on the country's roads.
According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the economic losses caused by traffic accidents in countries of the European region, including Central Asian states, may amount to between 0.4 percent and 4.1 percent of gross domestic product.
