Former Syrian Interior Minister Muhammad al-Shaar has surrendered to the country's new government. The former head of the Interior Ministry has voluntarily joined the security forces, Al-Arabiya reports.
Muhammad al-Shaar was born in 1950 in Latakia province. He served as Syria's Interior Minister from 2011 to 2018. Prior to that, he was the head of the military police. According to reports, the former minister was involved in suppressing the 2008 Sednaya prison riot, which resulted in the death of more than 20 prisoners.
Muhammad al-Shaar has been under Western sanctions since mid-2011. The former head of the Syrian Interior Ministry told Al-Arabiya TV that he did not break the law while serving as a minister.
Earlier, Bashar al-Assad's cousin was detained in Syria. He served as the head of the political security department in Daraa province during Assad's rule. It is emphasized that the detained person is one of the people involved in the crimes committed against the Syrian people.
It should be recalled that on December 8, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group came to power in Syria. On December 10, Muhammad al-Bashir announced his appointment as the head of the transitional government. Bashar al-Assad fled the country to Russia.
