Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the United States for its assistance to his country in an interview with Fox News after a row with US President Donald Trump. However, he declined to be drawn on whether he should apologize.
The Ukrainian leader reiterated his previous statements about security guarantees, saying he would not agree to a ceasefire without them.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Zelensky to apologize for "disgracing this matter."
After the Oval Office meeting turned into a brawl and bickering, the Ukrainian side went into another room, CBS News reported. Trump's national security adviser Mike Walz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio then told them to leave the White House. According to the source, Zelensky tried to defuse the situation and asked to resume the meeting, but Trump and other US officials were "offended" by the Ukrainian president's behavior. The agreement on mineral resources was not signed.
According to The Economist, when Zelensky arrived at the White House, US-Ukrainian relations were already "fragile and uncertain", but when he left, they "fell apart". According to the Financial Times, the meeting at the White House started as badly as possible. Zelensky was left between the US and Russian leaders, who seemed to have come to an understanding with each other rather than with the Ukrainian president. "Now it is clear that the US has abandoned Ukraine," the publication wrote.
