In the UK, 262 prisoners were mistakenly released from prisons between March 2024 and March 2025. The Sun reported this, citing information from the country's prison service.
According to the data, this figure has significantly increased compared to last year. If in 2023 the number of convicts released by mistake was 115, this year their number increased by 128 percent.
The Sun notes that some misreleases may be related to the prison population reduction program implemented by the Kir Starmer government. According to the program, convicts could be released early after serving at least 40% of their sentence.
However, according to the newspaper, there were cases of release of convicts convicted of certain crimes not covered by the program. This caused serious dissatisfaction and concern.
The Ministry of Justice of Great Britain announced the creation of a special group to study and eliminate these errors.
