
At the request of the Nigerian government, the United States carried out an airstrike against militants of the Islamic State terrorist group in Sokoto state in northwestern Nigeria. The operation was conducted as part of cooperation between the U.S. military and Nigerian security forces.
According to the U.S. military, the strike was based on precise intelligence and resulted in the elimination of several terrorists. The Pentagon emphasized that avoiding harm to civilians was a key priority during the operation.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the military action as part of security cooperation between the two countries. Officials said that intelligence sharing is helping to take effective action against terrorist groups.
The Nigerian government stated that violence in the country affects different religious groups and noted that ensuring the safety of all citizens and religious freedom remains a priority. The United States said it will continue to support Nigeria in the fight against terrorism.
