Men in Japan allowed to come to work in shorts

Amid the summer heat in Tokyo, Japan, some offices have relaxed their dress codes. Men can now come to work wearing T-shirts, athletic shoes and shorts instead of traditional suits.

The initiative was introduced primarily to create more comfortable conditions for employees and save electricity by reducing the use of air conditioners. However, the new rules have not been equally welcomed by everyone.

Some female employees consider it unfair that men have been allowed to wear shorts while certain traditional dress requirements for women remain in place.

In addition, men’s bare legs and leg hair have become a topic of discussion on social media. Some users have jokingly begun calling the situation “sunehara,” meaning “leg-hair harassment.”

Interestingly, some men who have started wearing shorts to work are reportedly having the hair on their legs removed, even turning to laser hair removal, to avoid making their colleagues uncomfortable.
