Ismoilov after 0-0: “A strong squad does not guarantee victory”
Super League leaders Neftchi dropped two points in Samarkand. The Fergana side drew 0-0 with Dinamo in the central match of Matchday 15, but head coach Islombek Ismoilov did not explain the result solely through the forwards’ mistakes.
He stressed that having a strong squad does not automatically mean beating any opponent. The coach praised Dinamo’s young players and cited the example of world champions Spain failing to beat Cape Verde.
There were attacks, but no goals
Both teams created chances in the Matchday 15 game in Samarkand. However, none of the attacks ended successfully, and the official score remained 0-0.
After the match, Islombek Ismoilov said he was not dissatisfied with the overall tempo, but identified finishing as the main weakness.
“Everyone knows that both teams play attacking football. There were enough attacks and scoring chances on both sides; the game only lacked a goal. We will study the mistakes.”
This draw was not just another point for Neftchi. Every match is expected to end in victory for a team at the top of the table. Therefore, although creating chances is positive, failing to convert them will remain the coaching staff’s main focus.
“A strong squad does not mean you will beat any opponent”
At the press conference, Ismoilov was asked why Neftchi’s famous and experienced squad had failed to produce the expected result this time.
The coach stressed that it is incorrect to compare teams solely by players’ names or squad value.
“Having a strong squad does not mean you can defeat any opponent.”
This also captures the main conclusion from the Samarkand match. Neftchi may have appeared superior in experience and individual quality, but Dinamo played with discipline and denied the leaders a comfortable game.
A strong squad increases a player’s chances of making the right decision in a given situation. But victory also requires teamwork, adapting to the opponent’s resistance and converting created chances.
Ismoilov praised Dinamo’s young players
The Neftchi coach openly said he did not consider the Samarkand club’s squad weak. Alongside experienced player Bahodir Nasimov, he singled out several of Dinamo’s young attacking players.
The coach mentioned the following players:
Firdavs Abdurahmonov;
Oybek O‘rmonjonov;
Behruzbek Obloqulov;
Anvarjon Hojimirzayev.
According to Ismoilov, the first three players may not yet be widely known, but they rank among Uzbekistan’s most talented players in their age group.
Anvarjon Hojimirzayev, meanwhile, was described by the coach as a player enjoying one of the best periods of his career.
“These boys are not yet very well known, but Dinamo’s young players at this age are among the best in Uzbekistan.”
This praise shows that it would be wrong to explain the 0-0 solely as Neftchi’s failure. Ismoilov acknowledged that the opponents also played quality football and created several scoring chances.
Why did he cite Spain and Cape Verde?
To explain his point, Ismoilov gave one of the most unexpected results involving the 2026 World Cup as an example.
Spain entered their group match against Cape Verde as clear favourites with a major advantage, but the game ended 0-0. FIFA also highlighted Cape Verde’s organised defending and goalkeeper Vozinya’s performance.
“You can see this from the fact that Spain could not beat Cape Verde at the World Cup.”
The main idea behind the coach’s comparison is that superiority on paper does not determine the score in advance.

Of course, national-team and club matches cannot be directly compared. However, in both games the more renowned side failed to turn possession and territorial dominance into goals, illustrating the coach’s point.
The invisible pressure of playing as leaders
Another important point from Ismoilov was that leading the table places additional pressure on a team.
“It is difficult to play as champions and stay at the top of the table.”
When the leaders take the field, opponents do not treat them like an ordinary league rival. Players work harder, defend more attentively and regard taking points from the favourites as a special achievement.
Neftchi remain in a situation where every match requires them to:
take control of the initiative;
break through a compact defence;
control the opponent’s counterattacks;
deliver results worthy of a title contender
.
This pressure grows especially when the score remains level for a long time. The team may start to rush, passing becomes less accurate and forwards may shoot sooner instead of choosing the better option.
Dinamo had nothing to lose
Ismoilov also highlighted the opponent’s psychological state. In his view, Dinamo took the field against the leaders without significant pressure.
“Dinamo had nothing to lose today, and they did not play badly. Dinamo also created many scoring chances.”
For the Samarkand side, the main task was to show their ability and offer worthy resistance to a title contender. A win would have been a major result, while a draw would have been positive. Defeat would not have been unexpected against the favourites.
Neftchi’s situation was completely different: only victory was expected. As a result, the pressure affected the two teams differently despite the similar circumstances.
The main lesson after the draw
Islombek Ismoilov did not harshly criticise his players at the press conference. He acknowledged the opponent’s strength and stressed that the chances created showed there was substance in his team’s performance.
However, Neftchi have a clear issue to solve:
Finish attacks more effectively.
Do not lose patience when goals do not come.
Do not underestimate the opponent’s young and little-known players.
Maintain the game plan even under the pressure of leading the table.
Improve chance conversion, not just the number of chances.
The 0-0 in Samarkand does not mean Neftchi are weak. But it once again showed that no match in the Super League is decided in advance.
If the Fergana club wants to continue fighting for the title, it must convert one or two chances in difficult away matches like this. At the end of the season, the champion is determined not only by big wins but also by points dropped on scoreless days.
