SMS-blaster fraud group arrested in Toronto

Toronto police have arrested three individuals who used an SMS-blaster device in the city center to send malicious messages to thousands of people. The group, active since November 2025, faces 44 charges. According to officials, this is the first such case recorded in Canada. This is reported by Techcrunch.com .
SMS-blasters force nearby smartphones and tablets to connect by spoofing mobile cell towers and broadcasting a stronger signal. The device exploits security vulnerabilities in 2G networks to send messages containing phishing links to users. Through these links, criminals aim to steal bank account details and personal information.
Police officials noted that these devices were not only used for fraud but also interfered with 911 emergency services. Installed inside a specially equipped vehicle, the device allowed for message distribution while moving across the city. A similar incident was observed in Bangkok in 2024.
Experts recommend that users disable 2G network connectivity in their phone settings. Specifically, Apple device owners can protect themselves from such threats by enabling the Lockdown Mode feature.
