A terrible tragedy in Kazakhstan’s Almaty region has caused widespread grief. On September 11, a powerful explosion occurred at a scrap metal collection point in the Ili district, claiming the lives of three people. It was confirmed that all the deceased were citizens of Uzbekistan. This was reported by “Zakon.kz” with reference to the regional police department.
According to official information, the explosion happened as a result of the impact of an unknown object. Emergency services – police, fire safety officers, and an ambulance team – immediately responded at the scene. Unfortunately, it was not possible to save the victims’ lives.
According to the owner of the facility, Amirbek Sherbaev, military waste might have been among the scrap metal. He believes that there might have been an unexploded mine:
“Behind us there is a workshop rented by Chinese nationals. Apparently, they once bought scrap metal cheaply, without knowing exactly what it contained. It is possible that scrap metal from the Ministry of Defense was included, and among it could have been unexploded mines. Now all security forces have arrived and are conducting inspections,” he said.
According to “Nur.kz”, the site has been completely cordoned off and no one is allowed in. Criminalists and representatives of the Ministry of Defense are working at the scene. The exact causes of the explosion are currently being investigated.
The news of the tragedy brought sorrow not only to the local population but also caused wide public concern. The untimely death of three workers once again highlighted the need to strictly observe safety rules.
