Record Heat at Zoo Claims the Lives of Three Lions

In Japan’s capital, Tokyo’s Tama Zoohas lost three lionesses to extreme heat. The record-breaking heatwave affecting the country is posing a serious threat not only to people but also to animals. This was reported by BBC .

According to the zoo administration, three lionesses aged between 3 and 15 died within a week. Initial veterinary examinations showed severe dehydration and simultaneous failure of several organs. Experts identify the high temperatures as the main cause of the deaths.

Miwa Kosaka, a representative of Tama Zoo, said that such an incident had never occurred before.

“This is the first incident of its kind for us. Last summer was also hot, but we did not suffer such losses among our lions,” she said.

The 3-year-old Mugi reportedly refused to eat on July 19. A day later, she was unable to stand. Staff tried to save her by cooling her down and administering fluids, vitamins, and medication. However, the lioness died on July 28. Later, 11-year-old Ichigo died on July 31, followed by 15-year-old Luena on August 3.

Three more lions—two males and one female—are currently said to be in critical condition. They are unable to move independently and are receiving treatment under constant veterinary supervision. Meanwhile, the condition of four other lions is improving, while six have shown no problems.

The zoo has activated special cooling systems to protect the animals. The lions are being moved to areas equipped with portable air conditioners and industrial fans.
