TikTok Banned in the U.S.: Reasons and What’s Next

According to NBC News, TikTok has ceased its operations for U.S. users. This move came just hours before the official enforcement of the ban. TikTok has over 170 million users in the U.S.

When attempting to access the app, users see a message stating: “Sorry, TikTok is currently unavailable. The law banning TikTok in the U.S. has come into effect. Unfortunately, this means you cannot use the app for now. Donald Trump has stated that he will consider restoring TikTok once he assumes office. Please stay tuned for updates!”

Additionally, TikTok and ByteDance’s CapCut editing app have been removed from U.S. app stores.

The U.S. Congress passed a law in April 2024 to block TikTok, citing national security concerns. President Joe Biden signed the law, giving ByteDance 270 days to sell TikTok to an American owner. This deadline expired on January 19, one day before Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Bloomberg reported that the Chinese government considered transferring TikTok’s management to Elon Musk. However, TikTok denied this claim.
