US President Donald Trump has told European countries that they must invest in their security no less than the United States in the future, and that security guarantees for Ukraine will be solely the responsibility of Europe, Bloomberg reported.
According to the agency's calculations, protecting Ukraine and its borders will cost European countries an additional $3.1 trillion over the next decade. Bloomberg took into account the costs of supporting Ukraine during the negotiations, restoring the country and its defense capabilities, as well as increasing Europe's own military power.
The restoration of the Ukrainian army could cost about $175 billion over ten years, depending on the state of the forces at the time of the peace agreement and how much territory it will have to protect, the publication wrote.
A 40,000-strong peacekeeping force would cost about $30 billion, with the bulk of the cost being to increase the military strength of EU member states and increase their overall defense budget to 3.5 percent of gross domestic product.
According to the publication's analysts, if European countries were forced to borrow to finance this, the debt needs of the five largest European NATO members alone would increase by another $2.7 trillion over the next decade. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
