European countries will not unite their national armies into a single structure to counter threats from Russia. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski commented on the proposal of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in this regard.

“We should be careful with such terms, because people can understand different things. If we are talking about the unification of national armies, this will not happen. But I support the development of the European Union's defense capabilities,” the minister said.

Sikorski also announced that the European Union is taking appropriate steps in this direction, creating a reinforced brigade. At the same time, he stressed that strengthening European defense should include both national and European components.

The Polish Defense Minister noted that Warsaw is not considering the possibility of sending its troops to Ukraine. He recalled that Poland's main task within NATO is to protect the eastern flank of the alliance, that is, its territories.

Earlier, Volodymyr Zelensky called on the European Union to create its own Armed Forces at the Munich Security Conference. The Ukrainian president expressed concern that the United States might reduce support for Europe: "Europe must have its own army. A European army. I really think the time has come. A European Armed Forces must be created."

Zelensky added that the Ukrainian army could serve as the basis for the creation of a pan-European force. "Without the Ukrainian army, the European army will not be able to stop Russia. This is a reality. Our army has modern combat experience, but its efforts are not enough," he said.
