European Union prepares new pressure measures against Russia
The European Union is on the verge of implementing a new and stronger package of sanctions against Russia. According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, this round of restrictions will target the energy and financial sectors.

These measures are being seen as a response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s refusal to hold direct talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his unwillingness to agree to a ceasefire.

“President Zelensky was ready to meet. But Putin didn’t come. This once again proves he is not interested in peace. That’s why we must increase the pressure,” said von der Leyen.

The new sanctions will not only target Russian banks, but also the Nord Stream gas pipeline and the Kremlin’s shadow naval fleet. Von der Leyen expressed hope for a unified stance with the United States on this issue.

“Compared to the period before the war, Russia has already lost 80% of its oil and gas revenues. The budget deficit is growing. We are ready to take even more decisive steps to bring Putin to the negotiating table,” she said.

According to DW, the sanctions expected to be announced on May 20 will be the most comprehensive in Europe’s history. They will cover four areas: the invasion of Ukraine, human rights violations, hybrid warfare, and chemical weapons.

It is worth recalling that on May 16, during negotiations held in Istanbul between Russia and Ukraine, the only agreement reached was on exchanging prisoners of war. This has further strengthened the perception that “Russia intends to continue the war.”
