Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung met in Tokyo and agreed to strengthen cooperation in security and economy. This was Lee Jae-myung’s first visit to Japan since being elected president in June.
The two sides agreed to deepen cooperation within the framework of the trilateral agreement with the United States, as well as to enhance joint projects in defense, economic security, and artificial intelligence. The meeting also discussed expanding youth exchange programs.
The two countries emphasized that they would work closely together against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats. Although Lee Jae-myung had previously been known for his critical stance toward Japan, at the Tokyo talks he stressed his support for strengthening relations.
President Lee will travel to Washington on August 25 to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump. The talks are expected to address security issues related to China and North Korea, as well as South Korea’s financial contribution to the presence of U.S. troops stationed there.
