In Vietnam, more than 586,000 people were forced to leave their homes due to the approach of a powerful storm. The typhoon is expected to reach the country’s coast on Monday morning. Currently, wind speeds are 166 kilometers per hour and may intensify.
The greatest danger is observed in the central provinces of Vietnam. Therefore, residents of these areas were ordered to leave their homes, flights were canceled, and boats were prohibited from going out to sea.
The storm is passing near China’s Hainan Island, where up to 320 millimeters of rainfall is forecast. In Vietnam, 300–400 millimeters of rain and wind speeds of up to 200 km/h are expected. In addition, sea waves of 2–4 meters high are predicted.
Authorities urged people not to go outside after 14:00 on Sunday. Soldiers have been deployed to assist citizens. Officials called the typhoon “extremely dangerous” and said that conditions are completely unsuitable for fishing, tourism, and other activities.
Vietnam Airlines canceled at least 22 flights. Experts fear this typhoon could cause as much destruction as last year’s storm, when 300 people died in Vietnam.
