A strong 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit southeastern Afghanistan on Thursday. It is the third in six days, forcing people to flee their homes in fear.
There are no official reports of casualties from Thursday’s quake. However, doctors said at least 17 people were injured and taken to Kunar Provincial Hospital. Earlier this week, a 5.5-magnitude quake temporarily halted rescue operations.
The strongest quake, which occurred on Sunday, killed 1,368 people and injured 2,180. Mountainous terrain and landslides continue to hinder rescue efforts.
The Taliban government has asked for international aid. The UN has released emergency funds, and the UK has also promised assistance. Experts say Afghanistan is in a high-risk seismic zone, so earthquakes occur frequently.
