A Senate vote to reopen the government ended in failure. Democrats and Republicans could not reach an agreement, so the shutdown will continue at least until Monday.
President Donald Trump’s administration blocked $2.1 billion allocated for Chicago’s subway. In total, more than $28 billion in funds in Democrat-led areas have been frozen.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker criticized the decision, calling it political pressure. Trump said he might also freeze funds in other cities and states.
The shutdown has halted federal agencies, leaving millions of workers without pay. If it lasts longer, it could become one of the largest shutdowns in U.S. history.
