Every parent, when they see their baby having hiccups, feels a bit concerned. In fact, in most cases this is considered a natural condition.
Pediatricians emphasize that hiccups are the result of frequent contractions of the diaphragm (the muscle that helps with breathing).
Main causes of hiccups in babies:
- Drinking breast milk or complementary food too quickly, swallowing air;
- Being left in the cold or rapid cooling of the body;
- The nervous system is not yet fully developed;
- Stronger emotional states (lots of laughing, crying) can also be a cause.
- Usually, hiccups go away within 10–15 minutes and do not cause serious harm to the baby.
When should you consult a doctor?
- If hiccups last for a very long time (more than an hour);
- If they occur after every feeding;
- If the baby has difficulty breathing or turns blue.
Experts say: in most cases, a baby’s hiccups are not dangerous. But if they cause too much discomfort, consulting a doctor is considered the safest decision.
