Conjoined twins born with one head die after surgery

In Brazil, 2-year-old conjoined twins Heloísa and Helena Batista da Silva died minutes after a complex surgery to separate them. This was reported by The Sun .

The girls shared brain tissue and blood vessels. The 15-hour surgery performed on Saturday in Ribeirão Preto was the fifth and most complex procedure aimed at separating them.

Doctors successfully separated the twins at the end of the long procedure. However, the girls' condition deteriorated sharply afterward. One twin experienced a severe drop in blood pressure, while the other suffered from high blood pressure.

According to reports, Helena suffered a heart attack at 23:12, and Heloísa at 23:26 . Medical staff performed resuscitation measures for 25 minutes to save their lives, but it was impossible to save the girls.

The girls underwent four surgeries over a year

Plastic surgeon Jayme Farina Junior, a member of the surgical team, stated that the girls had previously faced a series of severe medical issues.

"They had pneumonia several times, underwent a tracheostomy, and required a gastrostomy for feeding. There were also other conditions that weakened their bodies," he said.

The specialist noted that during the final separation, the girls' bodies could not withstand the instability that arose, leading to cardiac arrest.

During the first three separation surgeries, doctors managed to separate approximately 75 percent of the shared brain tissue and blood vessels.

In the fourth operation, special tissue expanders were used to create enough skin to cover the skulls during the final surgery.

The girls successfully underwent four complex surgeries over a year leading up to the final operation. The last procedure required the participation of more than 50 medical staff .

Doctors reported that Heloísa and Helena also experienced hemodynamic instability. This condition is related to insufficient blood flow to vital organs, which in severe cases can lead to organ failure and death.
