The UK government plans to ban the sale of energy drinks to anyone under the age of 16. If the law is passed, children will not be able to buy drinks such as Red Bull, Monster and Prime in shops, cafes, restaurants or online.
Experts say that one third of British children consume these drinks every week. Some of them contain more caffeine than two cups of coffee. This can cause insomnia, headaches and heart problems.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting said the government was acting after numerous complaints from parents and teachers. Sugary energy drinks may also worsen obesity and dental problems in children.
A 12-week consultation on the new law will be held. The official date has not yet been set, but the ban is expected to come into force soon.
