Famous Uzbek journalist and poet Karim Bahriev has passed away

The beloved Uzbek journalist and poet Karim Bahriev passed away at the age of 64 due to a serious illness. This was reported by the Journalists’ Association. A few days earlier, he was diagnosed with a hemorrhagic stroke and hospitalized.
Karim Bahriev was born on July 15, 1962, in the Urgut District of Samarkand Region. He graduated from Samarkand State University and then from the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University.
Throughout his life, he worked as a journalist, writer, translator, and politician. From 1990 to 1995, he also served as a member of parliament. Over the years, he worked for the newspapers «Uzbekistan Literature and Art», «Maarif», the publications «World Literature», «Dugonalar», and in the 1990s he was known as the editor-in-chief of the newspaper «Khurriyat».
Karim Bahriev was the author of numerous scientific, popular, and literary works. Among his poetry collections were books such as «Cracks in the Cup of Patience» and «Drip-Heart». He also wrote a number of works on journalism and law. In the early 2000s, his book «On Freedom of Speech» caused a great sensation.
In recent years, he was actively engaged in translation work. Karim Bahriev translated philosophical works of Plato, Voltaire, Montaigne, Pascal, Vauvenargues, La Rochefoucauld, and La Bruyère, wisdom of world peoples, Henry Ford’s book «My Life», George Orwell’s novels «1984» and «Animal Farm», Svetlana Alexievich’s novel «Chernobyl Prayer», Malcolm Gladwell’s work «Geniuses and Achievers», as well as stories by Chingiz Aitmatov, Dino Buzzati, and Giovanni Papini into Uzbek.
Karim Bahriev was the chairman of the Public Council of the Journalists’ Association, a member of the Writers’ Association, and a member of the Journalists’ Association. In addition, he taught students at the University of Journalism and Mass Communications as a specialist in the course “Media Law and Ethics”.
His priceless legacy, written works, and translations contributed greatly not only to the fields of literature and journalism but also to society as a whole. Memories of this great person will be preserved with love and respect.
