The results of an international study conducted by scientists from the University of Auckland in New Zealand and Xiamen University in China have surprised many, Science Daily reported.
The study analyzed the real environmental impact of electric cars, based on data from 26 countries over a period of 15 years.
Are electric cars more harmful than gasoline?
If a country's electricity grid is mainly dependent on fossil fuels - oil, coal or gas, electric cars could cause even more harm than gasoline cars.
“Electric cars are only about clean energy. They are not a universal solution,” says researcher Stephen Poletti.
When will they be profitable?
If at least 50% of the electricity comes from clean sources such as wind, solar or hydroelectric power, electric cars will reduce emissions.
This is only happening in a few countries so far:
- In New Zealand, the share of “green” energy is more than 80%
- But the global figure is still around 30%
Batteries, power and problems
The production process of electric car batteries also leaves a carbon footprint. If you charge them with electricity that runs on fossil fuels, the result can be negative.
That is, a car that you buy as “green” may turn into “black” with dirty electricity.
What should be done?
The conclusion of the study is clear:
- Not only electric cars, but also energy reform is needed;
- Increase renewable sources;
- Modernize electricity grids;
- Introduce “smart cities” and continuous storage systems.
