Developers refuse to work without Artificial Intelligence

By 2026, it will be impossible to imagine the daily work of developers without Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. Researchers have found that professionals have become so dependent on these technologies that it is almost impossible to separate them from these tools. However, experts warn that while AI increases coding speed, it does not always mean improved quality. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .
In February, the prestigious METR laboratory published an unexpected report: most developers do not want to perform even small tasks without AI assistance. The laboratory wanted to update a study conducted in 2025, but developers refused to participate in the experiment. The reason is simple — they were unwilling to work without AI even for a short-term test.
Interestingly, previous studies have shown that AI can actually slow down the workflow. Although developers create code faster, they spend more time later finding errors, fixing them, and guiding the AI. Nevertheless, in surveys, technical staff claim that AI has doubled their productivity.
Currently, "tokenmaxxing" — viewing the number of tokens used as a measure of productivity — has become a trend in the industry. But experts warn that this approach is dangerous. Over-reliance on AI and focusing solely on quantity could seriously damage software quality in the future and lead to excessive costs for companies.
