On Sunday, February 16, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the death of her husband and politician Alexei Navalny, Yulia Navalnaya announced the establishment of an annual prize in his name. "This will be a prize for young politicians, for mass initiatives," Navalny's widow said at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin. About 500 people gathered there to pay tribute to the politician's memory, a DW correspondent reports.
Politicians Ilya Yashin and Andrey Pivovarov, who were released from Russian prisons in August 2024 as part of a large-scale prisoner exchange between Russia and the West, stood in line at the church.
Speaking at the memorial service, Yulia Navalnaya said that her political mission is to ensure that “Vladimir Putin’s regime is brought to an end as soon as possible.” “I dream of returning,” she said.
Earlier, dozens of people held an anti-war rally in front of the Russian embassy in Berlin.
Memorial events in memory of Navalny were held around the world
Memorial events in memory of the Russian oppositionist were held in many cities in Russia and other countries. The general list of memorial events abroad compiled by Navalny’s team (rallies, memorial ceremonies, evenings of letters to political prisoners, screenings of the film “Navalny” and readings of his book “Patriot”) includes 146 cities in 44 countries.
In Moscow, the queue to Navalny’s grave stretched for more than 400 meters, the Agency reported.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on February 16 that the opposition leader died a year ago "for defending democracy and freedom in Russia." The German leader said that the Russian president "is waging a ruthless war against freedom and its defenders," but Navalny's courage "changed the situation and continues to have an impact even after his death."
