US President Donald Trump is changing the United States' strategy towards Ukraine in order to normalize relations with Russia and reject the policy of strengthening transatlantic ties pursued by his predecessors. This was reported by the Axios portal, citing Trump advisers.
According to the advisers, the West has long been pitting Russia against itself, forcing it to launch a special operation. Trump, on the other hand, is promoting the idea that NATO provoked the conflict in Ukraine. The advisers also note that Trump's critics will never recognize his position that he was in favor of a cessation of hostilities and that Ukraine does not have enough forces to resist Russia.
They point to two events that shaped Trump's views on Ukraine and NATO. In April 2008, at the NATO summit in Bucharest, Russia was indignant at the promise of future membership for Ukraine and Georgia.
In February 2014, a recording of a telephone conversation between then-US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and US Ambassador to Ukraine Jeffrey Pyatt was made public. In it, they discussed candidates for key positions in Ukraine and Washington's support for anti-Russian political forces. According to the portal, this conversation showed "deep US interference in Ukrainian politics."
According to the portal, a turning point in US foreign policy during Trump's term was the adoption of a neutral American resolution on the Ukrainian conflict by the UN Security Council on February 24. Prior to this, Washington had refused to support anti-Russia draft UN General Assembly resolutions prepared by European countries and Kiev.
US is rethinking its approach to relations with Russia
US President's National Security Advisor Mike Walz said on Fox News that the United States is developing a new approach to relations with Russia.
We are rethinking our relations with Russia. The first step was President Trump's conversations with Putin and Zelensky, followed by talks in Riyadh, he said.
Walz added that the United States is also rethinking how it will cooperate with Ukraine on the economy and important minerals so that "the American people can benefit from the huge investments made in the country."
On February 18 of this year, a meeting of the Russian and US delegations was held in Riyadh. Following the talks, Russian President Vladimir Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that an important step had been taken in the restoration of relations. At the same time, he noted that there is a long way to go to normalize relations between the two countries.
