South Korea and Poland have taken a step toward a new strategic cooperation in the defense industry—under the latest major contract worth $6 billion, Warsaw will receive 180 modern K2 tanks, reports yonhapnews.kr. This deal signifies further strengthening of long-term ties between the two nations in the defense and military technology sectors.
According to the information, 117 of the tanks will be fully produced at Hyundai Rotem Corporation’s facilities in South Korea. The remaining tanks will be assembled at plants in Poland, which also includes localization of manufacturing and technology transfer. In addition, this project is expected to elevate industrial cooperation between the nations to a new level.
South Korea’s defense minister, Sok Jong‑gun, emphasized that the signing of the second K2 tank export contract demonstrates further solidification of trust and cooperation in defense between the two countries. This agreement is recognized as the logical continuation of the series of deals signed in 2022.
Notably, before this contract, Poland also purchased self-propelled howitzers K9 and FA‑50 attack aircraft from South Korea, despite increasing costs related to aid for Kyiv. All of these are part of a broad defense and military modernization programme.
Thus, the contract opens up new opportunities not only in military terms but also in industrial and technological sectors for both nations. Officials believe this agreement will further enhance South Korea’s prestige in the global defense market, while Poland will reach a new level in national security.
Analysts note that such large contracts indicate the emerging new format of military-economic ties between European and Asian countries. This cooperation is viewed as a strategic victory for both parties. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
