In Russia, heated discussions have begun around a new initiative concerning the fate of migrants. Representatives of the “New People” faction in parliament proposed introducing a paid system for the stay of non-working migrant families in the country. According to them, this could create a balance between the interests of the state and society.
Under the current legislation, the spouse and children of a working-age migrant automatically have the right to remain in Russia. However, according to deputies, such families use infrastructure and social services but do not contribute financially to the country’s economy. Therefore, a paid residence system may become an effective way to increase budget revenues and encourage legal employment.
In their appeal to Russia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Vladimir Kolokoltsev, the faction’s representatives emphasized the need to legally formalize this initiative. According to the project, the amount and procedure of the special fee for non-working migrant families will be determined by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Experts believe that the new regulation will push migrants to seek official employment, engage in educational activities, or participate more actively in the economy. This will not only strengthen the legal status of families but also help expand the legal labor market in the country.
At the same time, the proposal sparked public debate. Some believe that such a measure would become an additional burden for migrants, while others emphasize that it could ensure fair access to state services.
In any case, if the draft law is adopted, new rules and obligations will be introduced for migrant families in Russia. This may go down in history as a significant turning point in the country’s migration policy.
