Elections to the People's Council (Syria's unicameral parliament) have been postponed to October 5th. This was reported by Al Hadath TV channel, citing sources.
Voting was initially scheduled for September 15-20. However, this week the election commission announced the postponement of the elections, citing logistical difficulties, including the lack of reliable records of civil status acts due to ongoing hostilities and population displacement in the country. Therefore, additional time has been allocated for technical preparation and legal calculations.
The Electoral College is expected to select 140 members during voting, while the remaining 70 members will be appointed temporarily by Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara. The Provisional Parliament operates for 30 months (may be renewed later) and acts as the legislative body until a permanent constitution is adopted and new elections are held. This structure is intended to maintain legal continuity and ensure the uninterrupted functioning of state institutions.
The People's Council was dissolved on January 29 by decree of the Provisional Government. Therefore, the new procedure is aimed at reformatting the electoral process, determining voter lists, and stabilizing document flow. Experts assess this decision as reducing logistical pressure and forming a flexible calendar.
Ultimately, the postponement of the elections to October 5 is interpreted as an attempt to restore the balance between security, documentation, and organizational factors. Officials promise to strengthen infrastructure preparedness by the new deadline, more fully update the voter database, and increase the transparency of the process.
