Bread prices worldwide: Djibouti tops with $10, Uzbekistan among cheapest

In honor of World Bread Day, RIA Novosti conducted an analysis comparing white bread prices across the globe. According to the study, the average price of a loaf is 138 rubles, or roughly 21,000 Uzbek soums.

The most expensive bread is sold in Djibouti, Africa — around 134,000 soums. The high prices are due to the country’s heavy dependence on imported food, including wheat. Other expensive bread markets include Bermuda (≈103,000 soums), the Cayman Islands (≈76,000 soums), Monaco (≈64,000 soums), and the Bahamas (≈63,000 soums).

The top 10 also feature Congo (≈61,000 soums), the Central African Republic (≈54,000 soums), Iceland (≈51,000 soums), Liechtenstein (≈51,000 soums), and South Africa (≈50,000 soums).

Conversely, the cheapest bread is found in countries with government subsidies. Algeria leads the list — there, a loaf costs about 2,100 soums. It is followed by Tunisia (≈2,300), Eswatini (≈2,400), Afghanistan (≈3,000), Libya (≈3,400), Chad (≈4,300), Uzbekistan (≈4,800), Kyrgyzstan (≈5,100), Kazakhstan (≈5,300), and Azerbaijan (≈5,500).

Russia ranked 35th (≈8,700 soums), while Belarus took 42nd (≈9,500 soums).

Experts note that these price differences reflect each country's economic policies, agricultural capacity, and dependence on food imports.

Thus, the most expensive bread is in Djibouti, the cheapest in Algeria — with Uzbekistan among the world’s ten most affordable markets.
