The Chairperson of the upper chamber of the Russian Federation Parliament, the Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko, appealed to the women of the country to have children starting from the age of 18. In her opinion, the most crucial task in the sphere of demography should consist of changing the mentality.
"Success is in a large family"
Matviyenko emphasized that it is necessary for childbirth to become the norm when a woman reaches adulthood, not at the current age of 28-29. According to her words, "Only a person who has a good, harmonious, large, and strong family should be considered to have achieved success."
The parliament speaker warned women that they should not postpone giving birth, as later, due to medical or other reasons, the opportunity to have children might be lost.
The Terrifying Figures of the Crisis
Behind such a sharp call lies a deep demographic crisis in Russia. According to analyses, the population of Russia is shrinking year by year. The population, which decreased by 0.08 percent compared to 2024, may decline to 138.8 million by 2045. Some scientists predict that this figure will fall to 74 million by 2100. The demographic crisis is certain to cause major social and economic hardships for the country.
For this reason, in recent years, the leadership of Russia has been actively encouraging the population to have children more often and earlier. President Vladimir Putin also urged young people not to postpone having children for the sake of studies or career. According to his decree, the total fertility rate should reach 1.6 by 2030, and 1.8 by 2036.
