Heavy rains, floods, and landslides have hit Sri Lanka. A state of emergency has been declared, electricity and drinking water are lacking, and many roads are blocked.
According to the Disaster Management Centre, more than 20,000 homes have been destroyed and over 108,000 people placed in temporary shelters. Evacuation orders are in place in some areas as the Kelani River rises rapidly.
The highest losses were reported in Kandy and Badulla provinces. Many areas are inaccessible due to blocked roads. Villagers face shortages of food and clean water, and some have found shelter in temples.
Rescuers saved people from a submerged bus and an elderly care home. The government has called for international aid and urged Sri Lankans abroad to provide financial support.
