London skeptical about rumors of a coup in Russia

In recent days, Western media have been widely discussing various speculations and reports about a potential coup d'état being prepared in Russia. Materials published by major outlets such as CNN and the Financial Times have sparked significant interest on the international stage. However, not everyone in the UK believes these versions.
Renowned British expert Mark Galeotti, an honorary professor at University College London, expressed skepticism about reports of an impending coup in Russia in an article published in The Spectator.
In his view, such materials resemble information warfare or psychological operations rather than serious analysis.
“No matter how harshly Western leaders criticize Russian disinformation, one should not forget that this process is not one-sided,” Galeotti emphasized.
The expert noted that the reliance of some publications on vague and anonymous sources like 'European intelligence services' raises serious doubts about the credibility of such information.
Mark Galeotti also stated that he does not believe in speculations about a potential political coup within Russia. In particular, he dismissed claims that Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu could be a key figure in such a process.
The expert described such versions as somewhat ridiculous and emphasized that they are based more on conjecture.
Galeotti also questioned claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin's security system has undergone radical changes.
He pointed out that Putin continues to attend public events, hold meetings with foreign delegations, and perform his duties as head of state. This shows that such scenarios circulating in the media do not align with reality.
Mark Galeotti said such reports are also linked to the mood in Europe. He believes the European public is interested in any version suggesting a quick and unexpected end to the war in Ukraine.
“There is a certain need in Europe for the idea that Russia could collapse from within, because it fits the hopes for some kind of 'miraculous' end to the war,” the expert said.
He added that in such a situation, even some intelligence structures might exaggerate events under the influence of the political climate.
According to the expert, in an environment of intensified information warfare, various rumors and speculations spread quickly, but it is not right to accept them all as truth.
