Seabirds flying in storms

Seabirds flying in storms
Small seabirds – during a storm they enter wind and waves to catch food lifted from the sea bottom. They use storm winds to fly long distances.

These birds breed only on Buigo island in the Madeira archipelago. They fly thousands of kilometers across the Atlantic, following storms and feeding in open sea.

Storms mix the ocean surface, bringing nutrient-rich water to the top.

Scientists believe that the birds’ purposeful flight into storms and use of wind energy is a survival strategy. This allows them to move efficiently over long distances.
