Men age faster than women — this has been scientifically confirmed, reported pnas.org.
According to the latest findings published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, men lose brain volume faster with age than women. A decrease in cell activity in many brain regions accelerates the aging process in men.
As part of the study, specialists analyzed more than 12,500 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans from 4,726 participants. Each individual had at least two scans taken about three years apart.
The results showed that men experience a more significant reduction in brain volume compared to women. In particular, in the postcentral cortex — the brain region responsible for sensations and movements — men showed an average annual decline of about 2 percent, while women showed 1.2 percent.
According to scientists, this explains why men tend to age faster and have shorter life expectancy. However, Alzheimer’s disease is still diagnosed in women almost twice as often.
The new study suggests that this phenomenon may not be directly related to aging itself, but rather to other biological and genetic factors.
The authors concluded that brain volume is one of the most accurate indicators of aging, while lifestyle, stress level, and sleep quality also play a major role.
