The illegal alcohol and tobacco market has shrunk in Uzbekistan

The share of illegal alcohol and tobacco in Uzbekistan has significantly decreased — almost halved over the past year. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the share of illegal alcohol products dropped from 35 percent to 18 percent, and that of tobacco products decreased from 19.6 percent to 9 percent.

To regulate the industry, the Alcohol and Tobacco Market Regulation Inspectorate has been established. Manufacturers have been connected to a digital monitoring system: production facilities have been equipped with video cameras and counters, and vehicles have been fitted with GPS tracking devices.

The results of inspections show that the market is gradually becoming more transparent. During the reforms, more than 1,400 violations were identified, and nearly 900 thousand bottles of alcohol as well as the same amount of cigarette packs were confiscated.

44 companies have been deprived of their licenses, and the activities of seven more have been temporarily suspended.
