Google will preserve shortened goo.gl links

According to its official blog, Google has decided to abandon its previously announced plans to delete shortened URLs in the "https://goo.gl/..." format. The company had earlier planned to completely stop supporting these links starting from August 25, 2025. This decision had raised concerns among many users.

However, in its statement, Google said: “We previously announced that we would stop supporting all goo.gl URLs starting August 25, 2025. However, recognizing that these links are embedded in countless documents, videos, messages, and [etc.], we reconsidered our approach based on the feedback we received.”

That is, Google has decided to retain actively used shortened links. From now on, only unused and inactive goo.gl links will be permanently deleted after August 25. If a link previously showed a message saying “This link will stop working soon,” then it will indeed be removed.

At the same time, all other currently functioning and properly redirecting “https://goo.gl/...” links will continue to work after August 25. Google is encouraging users to check their links: “Click your link today. If it redirects without any notification, then it remains active and will not be deleted.”

This decision by Google shows its readiness to listen to user needs and take their feedback into account. Since millions of websites and applications have distributed important content via these shortened links, this change is considered good news for the public. Google's move is seen as a key step toward simplifying daily workflows in the tech world.
