A three-hundred-year-old violin was sold for $11 million in New York
A rare violin made by Antonio Stradivari in 1714 has sold for $11.25 million at an auction in New York, The Guardian reports.

The historic piece of music was expected to set a new auction record, but the record, set by the Lady Blunt violin (made in 1721), which sold for $15.6 million in 2011, remains unchanged.

Described by Sotheby’s as a “melodic masterpiece,” the 311-year-old violin once belonged to the famous Hungarian violinist József Joachim, who was a close friend of the great composer Johannes Brahms.

In 2015, after the death of its last owner, former student Si-Hon Man, the violin was donated to the New England Conservatory. However, according to the condition, it was to be auctioned and the proceeds were to be directed to a music scholarship fund.

About 600 violins made by the legendary Italian master Antonio Stradivari and his family in the 17th and 18th centuries have survived to this day. Most of them are in private collections. According to some reports, musical instruments made by Stradivari have been sold in various transactions for up to $ 20 million.
