In Japan, a traditional hide-and-seek game requires 100 players
The Japanese Hide and Seek Association is planning a big game with more than 100 participants in late February.

The venue for the game is the hills of the small village of Shakotan, located on the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido Prefecture. Winters in the village are very cold - only on a few days does the temperature rise by 1 degree during the day. Most of the territory is permanently covered in thick snow. The village has a population of only about 2,200.

The Japanese Hide and Seek Association often holds this game, for example, in the fall this game was organized on a deserted island in Nagasaki. Last year, hide and seek was also held in the winter under the snow.

The organization is currently looking for 100 participants who want to take part in the 2025 game. This year's game is scheduled for February 23, when temperatures could drop to -5-10 degrees Celsius. The association says participants should dress warmly. All volunteers over the age of 6 can take part, with last year's oldest participant being 60.

Although the game is essentially a hide-and-seek game, some precautions have been taken to ensure that participants don't get lost in the storm.

You must purchase a ticket to participate in the game. Winners of previous hide-and-seek games, researchers with experience in Antarctica, and members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces will be involved in the search for people.

The game's conditions are slightly different from a typical hide-and-seek game. Participants do not have to hide for long, but must be able to return to the base within three minutes of the start of the game without being seen by the searchers. The game consists of several rounds.

The event lasts from 12:45 to 16:00. Participants gather at a local community center at noon, then travel together to the game site. Regular tickets cost 3,000 yen ($19) for adults and 1,500 yen for children. In addition, 16 tickets for 15,000 yen are available for those interested, regardless of age. It includes accommodation in a dormitory, use of a local hot spring and sauna, and a reception. Tickets can be ordered online at this website.
