The US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is preparing to lay off thousands of employees, the Associated Press reports. The decision was made immediately after a visit by an official from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

According to the agency, we are talking about probationary employees who have not yet signed a full employment contract. Their employment contracts are expected to be terminated this week.

Neither the White House nor the IRS commented on this information. According to ABC News sources, about 15 thousand IRS probationary employees will lose their jobs. According to the TV channel's interlocutor, the cuts concern employees who are not directly involved in processing tax returns, so their dismissal should not affect the IRS's activities.

According to the TV channel, a DOGE employee visited the headquarters of the US Internal Revenue Service on February 13. His purpose was to inspect the IRS's technical support, as well as to find out how tax service audits are conducted.

Recall that last week it was reported that up to 400 employees of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), including specialists involved in the creation and maintenance of nuclear weapons at NNSA, were dismissed. According to an AP source, NNSA employees were dismissed "unexpectedly" on February 13. Later, the Trump administration canceled the dismissal of hundreds of NNSA employees.
