Former US President Donald Trump has reacted sharply to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's statements about a peace deal with Russia. He called Zelensky's statement that the war is "still a long, long way" away from an end "the worst statement ever made by a Ukrainian leader."
In a post on the Truth Social network, Trump noted that such comments could negatively affect US support for Ukraine. He believes that Zelensky is dragging out the peace process with American assistance. Trump also noted that European leaders had acknowledged in their meeting with Zelensky that it was impossible to end the war without the United States.
Trump linked to an Associated Press article from March 3 titled "Zelensky Says War with Russia 'Still a Long, Long Way' Away," which said Zelensky had said he intended to continue relations with the United States. "I think our relationship with the United States will continue because it's more than just a casual relationship," Zelensky said.
Also on February 28, Zelensky met with Donald Trump and his Vice President J.D. Vance at the White House. The talks ended in acrimony, and Zelensky left the meeting early at Trump's request. It was also noted that an agreement on the extraction of rare earth metals between Ukraine and the United States was not signed.
After these events, Zelensky traveled to London and met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Then he attended a summit with European leaders to discuss support for Ukraine. At the end of the summit, Starmer announced that a ceasefire plan with Ukraine was being worked on and would be presented to the United States later.
While the issue of ending the war in Ukraine remains one of the most important topics in world politics, it remains unclear how much impact the controversial statements of Zelensky and Trump will have on international relations. The next steps of the United States and the position of European states will be crucial in this matter. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
