Gaza Strip Update: Hamas accepts ceasefire offer and new hostage release
The Palestinian group Hamas said it had accepted a proposal by Egyptian and Qatari mediators to restore a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and release five Israeli hostages.

Khalil al-Hayya, a Hamas leader, confirmed on Saturday evening that he had responded positively to the draft agreement. He said the proposal came from Egyptian and Qatari mediators two days ago and Hamas had accepted it.

Israel-US talks: Is the deal in jeopardy?

Egyptian sources told Reuters that Israel was also considering a new proposal and that consultations with the mediators were continuing. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office also said that a response proposal had been submitted coordinated with the US.

If the deal is reached, it could be signed on the eve of Eid al-Fitr. However, it is possible that the process will be as difficult as previous peace talks.

Hostages and Hamas demands

The first phase of the truce, which began on January 19, ended in early March, during which time Hamas released 33 hostages. However, it is believed that 59 people are still being held hostage.

Hamas is demanding the release of all hostages in exchange for a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and an end to the war. However, Israel does not agree to this condition and, together with the United States, is proposing to extend the terms of the previous truce.

Tense situation in Gaza: the number of victims is increasing

On March 18, Israel launched a new attack on Gaza. According to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health, more than 900 Palestinians have been killed since then.

Relatives of Israeli hostages have criticized Netanyahu, saying that his refusal to agree to a truce is putting their loved ones at risk.

Can a new deal bring hope?

Hamas' acceptance of the offer could be an important step towards peace. But Israel's response and the US position will determine the fate of the deal.

How will this process change the situation in the Middle East? More information on this may emerge in the coming days.
