On May 5, Monday, a formal farewell ceremony for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz took place in the spacious courtyard of the historic Bendlerblock military complex in Berlin. This traditional event, called “The Grand Tattoo” (Der Große Zapfenstreich), is considered one of Germany’s most important political ceremonies.
During his final speech as Chancellor, Olaf Scholz once again emphasized solidarity, unity, and commitment to democratic values. He called the peaceful transition of power in Germany a powerful symbol of democracy.
“The peaceful handover of power in a culture of mutual respect and unity, like we see in Germany, is not something ordinary. That’s why we must always cherish democratic values and civilized political dialogue. It is a unique and precious asset,” — said Scholz.
He also reminded that high positions in democratic societies are always temporary:
“In democracy, offices are granted for a limited time. This is what separates us from many authoritarian regimes, and we must never forget that.”
Scholz expressed his best wishes to his successor, Friedrich Merz, hoping for a successful and responsible term:
“I wish Friedrich Merz success, strength, and ease in fulfilling this important duty,” — he added warmly.
The event was not only a farewell but also a tribute to the institution of chancellor. Over 300 soldiers and officers participated, alongside President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and incoming Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The Bundeswehr Orchestra performed three musical pieces personally selected by Scholz:
– In My Life by The Beatles,
– a concerto by Johann Sebastian Bach,
– and Respect by Aretha Franklin.
This memorable and dignified farewell will be remembered as a symbol of Germany’s political traditions, showing the stability of its democracy and political culture.
Friedrich Merz will officially assume office on May 6, opening a new chapter in Germany’s political future.
