In the western part of Japan, an unusually bright fireball appearing in the sky amazed residents and excited stargazers. According to experts, such a flash, visible from hundreds of kilometers away, was caused by an extraordinarily bright meteor, reports Peopletalk.
NHK channel employee Yoshihiko Hamahata witnessed the event while driving in Miyazaki Prefecture:
“I saw a white light descending from above. It was so powerful that the outlines of the houses around us became clearly visible. It felt as if dawn had come. For a moment, I was filled with amazement and confusion,” he said.
The director of the Sendai Space Museum, Toshihisa Maeda, also confirmed that it was a very bright meteorite. In his opinion, it might have fallen into the Pacific Ocean. “People even felt vibrations in the air. It shone as brightly as the Moon,” he said.
According to NASA, the objects that cause such events are usually larger than one meter. Such bodies, producing a bright explosion in the atmosphere, are called “bolides” in scientific literature.
