A tragic event occurred in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, which shocked not only morally but also legally. 28-year-old woman Nikki Payla was set on fire by her husband in front of their 6-year-old son. This incident happened on August 21, and the main cause of the tragedy was the continuous demand for expensive gifts.
Consequences for Expensive Gifts: Live Burning and Torture as New Wedding Traditions
The violence against Nikki Payla and her family had been ongoing since 2016, following their wedding. According to family members, Payla and her sister had given various expensive gifts to the Bhati family, including a "Scorpio" car, a Royal Enfield motorcycle, and gold jewelry. Statistics show that every year thousands of women are subjected to violence from their husbands and their families for expensive gifts, and many lose their lives. Many of these cases, however, never reach official authorities.
Husband’s Guilt and Police Struggle: Investigation in Payla’s House
During the trial, Vipin Bhati refused to admit his guilt, stating that he had not burned his wife, and she died on her own. "I didn’t kill her. She died on her own," he said. As a result, the police arrested his mother, who is also accused of subjecting Nikki to continuous physical and mental abuse. On August 25, during the investigation, two more members of the Bhati family — Vipin’s father, Satya Vir (55 years old), and his brother Rohit Bhati (28 years old) — were arrested.
Tragedy and Criminal Investigation: Research, Explanations, and Treatment
According to police reports, the woman was set on fire with a highly flammable substance. She was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi with severe burn injuries, but unfortunately, she passed away on the way. At the same time, her sister, Kanchan, who is also a member of the Bhati family, shared videos showing the violence Nikki had endured, and these videos were added as evidence in the case.
"The sister came to us with a petition and asked to hold the husband and his family accountable. We immediately opened a criminal case," said police officer Dharmendra Shukla.
Society and Youth Responsibilities: New Needs and Public Appeals
The importance of the criminal investigation is not limited to local authorities, but it should also lead to the responsibility of the offenders and a broader societal response. Despite the tragic event, society must strive to protect culture, morals, and peace, offering moral and social support to the younger generation.
