Many people think of "fraud" mainly as the theft of bank card information or the receipt of SMS codes. In reality, there are many and varied methods of deception carried out through the internet. Therefore, the question of which gender members are more likely to believe in which types of fraud is also relevant.
What are the types of cyber fraud?
Romantic scams (Romance Scams) are mentioned first. In this type, scammers create fake profiles on dating sites or social networks, establishing emotional closeness with a person. After gaining trust, they ask for money under the pretext of illness, airfare, visa, or a relative's problem. In this case, victims are usually people suffering from loneliness, adults seeking relationships, and kind, trusting individuals. According to statistics, women in this category are more likely to be scammed.
The second major type is investment and financial fraud. By promising "easy income," scammers present themselves as traders or crypto experts. Initial transactions are executed as if they were successful, later requiring significant funds. In this case, more men, especially those over 30, become victims.
The third type is deception related to online trade. Cheap goods are offered through fictitious online stores, but after payment, the goods do not arrive or arrive in poor quality. Personal data can also be stolen.
The fourth type is technical assistance scams. In this method, a fraudster introduces themselves as an employee of Microsoft, Apple, or a bank and asks you to install a program under the pretext that "you have a virus on your computer." Then you'll be charged or your device will be taken under full control. In this case, older people are more likely to be deceived.
Who is more likely to be deceived by gender?
According to Australia's ScamWatch, the proportion of women in romantic scams was 54.9%, while the proportion of men was 43.3%. Women accounted for 75.3% of the total damage. However, on average, men lost more money. For example, in 2024, women in Australia suffered losses of $20.1 million from romantic scams, while men suffered losses of $13.3 million.
It was also reported that in a major criminal case in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, more than 5,000 men were deceived by promises of quick wealth through cryptocurrency.
Studies show that people seeking emotional support and mentally vulnerable are more likely to become victims of fraud. That's why more women suffer from romantic fraud and more men from investment fraud.
In short, as the types of cyber fraud increase, the threat to various segments of society also increases. Therefore, every person should be extremely cautious about any offers of "quick profit" or "emotional intimacy" on the Internet.
