The UN has allocated US$5 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to help citizens affected by the powerful earthquake in Afghanistan.
These funds will be used to carry out rescue and assistance work after the natural disaster, and to provide the affected population with the necessary food, drinking water, medicines, and temporary housing.
In an official statement, the UN Secretary-General expressed solidarity with the people of Afghanistan. He also expressed sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
According to the organization, together with partner organizations in Afghanistan, the needs of the population are being promptly assessed. Coordination is also being carried out with local de facto officials to attract additional support forces if necessary.
The United Nations emphasizes that the available funding is insufficient for the current humanitarian needs. The Secretary-General called on the international community to allocate additional funds and resources. In his opinion, more material assistance will be required for a prompt and effective response to this tragic event.
According to experts, the most important task in the first days after the earthquake is to provide the population with clean water, medical services, and temporary housing. Therefore, the UN and its partners are implementing programs primarily focused on urgent needs.
