An immigration raid was carried out at the Hyundai plant located in the U.S. state of Georgia. More than 300 South Korean citizens were detained and later sent back to their homeland on a special plane. One of them, however, chose to remain in the U.S.
In South Korea, this incident caused major discontent. President Lee Jae-myung said that detaining workers in such a manner harms trust and investment between the two countries.
The Hyundai leader stated that due to the raid, the opening of the plant would be delayed by at least two months. LG Energy Solution emphasized that some employees possessed visas.
The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs is asking the U.S. Congress to introduce new visas for Korean companies. Experts say this incident may negatively affect economic cooperation between the two countries.
